- NOAA led the development of the first Climate Reanalysis project (Kalnay et al., 1996), so there is a strong tradition in this field.
- More recent products include the Climate Forecast System Reanalysis, and the 20th Century Reanalysis.
- Very exciting to see that we are now on the precipice of a new concerted 3-year research effort led by this Task Force to advance the next-generation of NOAA reanalysis
- The Task Force members include many of the key players both across NOAA as well as in the broader community
- And it is important to point out the critical role of the CPO / MAPP program in providing the “glue” through a set of reanalysis projects that will build stronger collaboration and accelerate progress.
- MAPP research will seek to identify ways to mitigate the impacts of model and observational errors, harness recent advances in the ability to ingest observations into models, and explore the use of new observational datasets and model improvements.
- MAPP projects will also consider how to better represent various components of Earth’s climate system including their coupling, paving the way for a more integrated Earth system reanalysis.
- The Climate Reanalysis Task Force represents an important contribution to advancing national capabilities to monitor and understand climate anomalies via advanced reanalysis and also will spark international reanalysis research as part of WCRP.

Climate Reanalysis Task Force Introduction and Reanalyses.org
Climate Reanalysis Task Force for research on outstanding issues in atmospheric, oceanic and land reanalysis.
Goal is that the Task Force to be greater than sum of the individual projects and link NOAA efforts to other national and international reanalysis efforts.
Research to prepare for next generation of NOAA Climate reanalyses from the late 19th century to present.
Internet collaboration tools may help facilitate the Task Force effort.
Reanalyses.org is one tool – a hybrid blog, wiki with file management (Drupal Content Management System).
Task Force can use it to share new findings and plans
Reanalyses.org currently has
- Summary descriptions of atmospheric reanalysis and oceanic reanalysis datasets and access methods and tools to study them
- Highlight findings from new papers, e.g., Comparisons
