Workshop Objectives:

  • Report on NOAA Climate Reanalysis Task Force progress
  • Exchange reanalysis approaches, algorithms, and techniques currently in use and under development.
  • Discuss techniques for addressing outstanding issues in the reanalysis efforts, e.g., presence of spurious discontinuities and trends, coupling of Earth System components, inclusion of new areas such as aerosols.
  • Identify the various requirements for reanalysis products.
  • Determine strategies and overlaps for national and international reanalysis efforts based on scientific drivers for climate and weather research.

1. Can we prove (analytically or by cleverly designed numerical experiment) that we can produce (temporally) homogeneous analyses from an inhomogeneous data input, no matter how egregious the inhomogeneity of the latter?

5. Reanalysis Evaluation

Objective: Identify the various requirements for reanalysis products.

1. Should there be an effort by reanalyses providers or reanalysis data distributors to create output files that are as similar to each other as reasonably possible to facilitate use of the data. For example, providing time aggregated files, following certain netCDF standards, using similar attributes, providing long-term mean files, etc.?

2. Would there be a use for a shared code base that could more easily allow users to compare reanalyses and reanalyses derived products (such as budgets) to each other and to observations?

I think Jack's question gets at half of our overarching goal. The other half relates to reconstruction of historical change.

Here are some questions that are an expansion of the CRTF charge:

1) How are we doing with our traditional responsibility monitoring of upper ocean heat content?
>> how is our monitoring of this?
2) What are the advantages (and how do we define this) of improving assimilation and adding new data types?
>> Is an ensemble system worth the computational cost?
>> Is eddy permitting resolution sufficient for now?
>> What new data types (e.g. SSS) need to be included as constraints?
3) How are we progressing towards a cryospheric analysis?
>> What are the outstanding problems to be solved?
>> How do we monitor and evaluate ice volume?
>> Are we putting sufficient resources on this critical area?
4) How is our analysis of nearsurface temperature?
>> Is this a problem that we feel is under control?
>> More generally, are we properly handling diurnal mixed layer dynamics?
5) What advances in integration of the oceans with the earth system are appropriate now?
>> Integrated atmospheric correction for SST, SSS, ocean color, and sea level?
>> What can we do towards coupled assimilation?

Would it be useful to suggest that reanalyses providers create output files that are as similar to each other as reasonably possible to facilitate use of the data. For example, providing time aggregated files, following certain netCDF standards, using similar attributes, providing LTM files, etc.?

Gil,

We have been wrestling with the issues in MERRA-2 that are not improvements over MERRA. We have many improvements, and a few degradations. Perfection, I don't think is attainable at this time. This will happen in any new reanalysis for a while, I suspect. There are many other reasons a MERRA-2 has to go forward with imperfections. Specifically, MERRA is running out of data, and this was the new system that came forward. We had a new method for maintaining mass balance, which we felt would ameliorate the jumps in the water cycle. The only way to fully test that was to run a full on reanalysis. Since it takes so long to integrate, we cannot hold this one, while we patch fix update and run another.
