Craig, Have you looked at whether the operational analyses for recent periods from the centers are as different as the reanalyses you were showing? Has the data assimilation problem for the more complete satellite observing system solved the problem? thanks, gil

Gil,

For some parameters the variance between the various reanalyses has decreased approching the present. This is true for QBO winds. Model biases at the top of their models still exits. Biases can always be eliminated. The anomalies may be of more importance. The variance of the anomalies of the various reanalyses for the recent 5-10 years is much lower than the 1980's. This is due to more satellite observations. There may always be some difference between one reanalysis vs another, for instance, the ERA-I gives more weight to radiosondes than MERRA does. An interesting comparison in the near future between the reanalyses will be to see how their sfc+radiosonde only runs compare and how different they are with the runs including satellite data.

In the Q&A of Craig's talk there was a comment that some of the issues may be attributed attributed to NOAA7 Ch2 (SSU?) problems. I didn't know the voice. I'm curious if between Craig and who mentioned that channel, if I could get a brief synopsis from them of the problem and why that channel might be a problem, or related to Craig's problem. 1) I want to search through MERRA O-F to see if I can see a problem there and 2) recommend to the DA group we flag the data for that channel if need be.

MERRA used a Goddard RTM for SSU, because CRTM was not ready when MERRA started. However, MERRA2 will be using CRTM for SSU. We are having a meeting 10/31, but we expect to begin MERRA2 once all the i's are dotted and t's crossed (1 week, maybe?) If this April data should be flagged, I need to get on it soon. Any guidance is appreciated!

That was Jack Woolen discussing the NOAA-7 SSU issue. Jack noticed that when we begin using NOAA-7 SSU data in 1981 that model errors increase. The NOAA-7 SSU Channels 2 and 3 had rapid cell pressure changes during the first year or two. (See figure 2 of Kobayashi et al, QJRMS 135, 2009) The CRTM should know about these cell pressures changes and the forward model should make correct radiances. Even so, our in house expert, Cheng-Zhi Zho cautions us about using NOAA-7 data. We are going to run a test for the period when both NOAA-6 and NOAA-7 data are available to see if just usng NOAA-6 improves things.
