CRTF Telecon - 01-29-2014

NOAA Climate Reanalysis Teleconference

Our next Climate Reanalysis Task Force (CRTF) telecon will be on 1/29 (Wednesday) 2-3 pm. The agenda is



1. Discussion on content and framing of upcoming CRTF telecons (CRTF Co-Leads) - 25 min.



2. Ongoing experiments with the NCEP Hybrid EnKF data assimilation system as part of the NOAA Climate Reanalysis (NCR) project (Jack Woollen) - 25 min.



3. Possibility of CRTF gathering during AMS - 5 min.

 

Notes from call by J. Carton:

1) There was a general sense that members of the CRTF still don't really know what the other groups are doing.  We have proposed (Set1) additional information in future telecons, but it was suggested that we could create a password-protected section of reanalysis.org and ask the groups to put some description of their activities and plans (e.g. the proposal work plans) on the web.  It would also be useful for the groups to expand the description a bit to give an idea of where they are going (beyond what was actually funded).  This latter will help develop collaborations.

2) The issue of data sets arose -- the projects are carrying out sets of experiments and other investigators may be interested in looking at the experiments.  Like the project descriptions (above) it would be useful for the groups to describe any significant experiments that they could make available for collaborative studies.  An example might be the NCEP limited time period experiments comparing 3DVAR vs HYBRID.  At a minimum we would need a description of what experiments are available.



3) There was quite a positive reaction to the idea of sending representatives from the CRTF to report on our activities to other groups, for example the GEWEX and CLIVAR meetings in July.  The details (who will do it -- what to present) was not discussed.



4) The idea of discussing system interactions (also 'Grand Challenges') seemed to be received positively, but immediately attracted the comment that we should connect to the groups addressing some of these issues (such as GEWEX and water).



5) Annarita suggests using the NOAA booth at AMS as a spot for an informal CRTF "meet & greet" gathering next week:
